This last week has been a whirlwind. I was back on my old stomping grounds and had the privilege of shadowing Laura Cipullo, a private practice dietitian based in New York City at her Park Avenue office.
Laura specializes in diabetes and eating disorders, is a Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian, and president of the New York chapter of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. I simply can not say enough good things about this woman. It has been a true honor to learn from the best in the field.
Laura is featured often in the media and recently published a book with Women’s Health Magazine called “The Body Clock Diet”. In the book, Lara gives you tools to reset your “body clock” so the you can overcome food, sleep and stress issues that may be causing us to eat for emotional reasons or out of boredom.
Our circadian rhythm is our 24 hour internal master clock, harmony of biological rhythms that control our sleep and wake, hunger and fullness hormones, body temperature, blood pressure, depression and energy. These all in turn affect our body composition. When our body is ticking optimally, weight management comes more easily and our natural hunger patterns help guide our food choices.
Some philosophies she endorses in her book are to adopt an “all foods fit” philosophy, eating anything you desire, mindfully. She shows research that supports that diets don’t work and gives you the tools you need to stop the diet mentality once and for all.
Laura very clearly outlines the differences between physical, emotional and behavioral hunger. One of my favorite tools she offers is the “comfort card” in which you write your five most effective coping skills you know to minimize feelings of stress, anxiety and behavioral hunger. By the end of this book you truly feel you have to tools to become a more mindful eater and connect with your internal biological rhythms. Her book also includes delicious recipes and every-day workouts- total plus!
If you are in the New York area and are looking for a dietitian with sound nutrition advice and experience I highly recommend Laura. You can find her at lauracipullo.com and her book here!
