Capping off a week of summer brunch ideas with yogurt parfait! Antioxidant-rich berries, heart-healthy chopped nuts, creamy probiotic yogurt and chocolaty cacao nibs (not optional). Sunday brunch never tasted SO good. Let’s break down the components.
Yogurt
Consuming dairy products provides health benefits, especially when it comes to our bones and teeth. Yogurt is rich in calcium which is needed for maintaining bone mass. Dairy intake is linked to improved bone health which may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Additionally, a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes as well as a lower blood pressure are associated with diary intake.
Choosing low-fat or fat-free dairy is the current dietary recommendation. However, research is starting to reveal the benefits of high fat dairy, although more work needs to be done on clearly elucidating these effects.
For now, choose a variety of plain yogurt options varying in dairy fat. I like to make my own but store-bought is incredibly convenient in a pinch.
Fruit toppings
Berries are the perfect topping for a yogurt parfait because they are small enough to get a little in each bite. They happen to be in peak season when summer hits. Berries are some of the most antioxidant-rich foods which can help combat free-radical damage to our cells. Some of my favorite berries include blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, goji berries,
Chopped nuts
Our hearts adore these pocket-sized, protein-packed confections of nature. Nuts are rich in mono- and poly- unsaturated fat that help lower our bad cholesterol, keep our arteries clean and heart’s happy. With so many types offering a slew of benefits, you can’t go wrong with your handful of choice. Nutrient dense, low glycemic and incredibly satiating– I’d say it’s the perfect topping for a parfait. Some my current favorites include pistachios, cashews, walnuts, and almonds.
Extras
I like having some extras available for added crunch and flavor. Chocolate chips or cacao nibs are a non-negotiable as well as shredded coconut, raw honey, granola and chia seeds.
