It’s Good Food Friday! Today I share three simple ways to spring clean your diet on ABC Charleston, so that you feel your best this season.
Tip 1: Replace sugar-sweetened beverages with nutrient-dense options.
100% Florida Orange Juice is a great example which contributes vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.A common misconception about orange juice is that it’s jam-packed with added sugars. In truth, 100% orange juice contains NO added sugars. The sweetness you taste is from naturally occurring sugars that develop as the oranges grow.Additionally, a glass of 100% orange juice can help keep you hydrated. It naturally contains about 90% water along with important electrolytes like potassium, magnesium and calcium. Electrolytes are critical for the human body to function, but they are lost throughout the day with fluid losses, especially with sweat.Help stay hydrated and reach your daily fruit intake recommendation by adding 100% orange juice to smoothies, homemade salad dressings, or baked goods for a boost of nutrition.
Another nutritious beverage option is plant-based milk. Mooala ?is a plant-based milk company whose products are made with organic, clean ingredients – making them the perfect drink for the whole family. Unlike many other almond milks on the market, Mooala’s Original Almondmilk actually tastes amazing, has a creamy texture like dairy milk but without the dairy and is naturally sweetened with honey while being low in sugar. Mooala ?is best known for the Original Bananamilk which is great for allergy-conscious families, since it’s nut-free and dairy-free made with bananas and sunflower seeds, with no added sugar. Besides drinking by the glass, it works great in my 5 ingredient naturally-sweetened banana oat bread muffin recipe. Simply blend together 2 bananas, 2 eggs, 1 tsp of baking soda, 2 cups of oats and ¼ cup of Mooala original banana milk. Transfer to a muffin pan and bake for 20 minutes at 350 F.You can now find “Moo-allah” at Publix, Bi-Lo or on Mooala.com.
Tip 2: Focus on ADDING nutrition to your diet rather than focusing won what you can’t eat.
This can be as simple as adding a handful of spinach to your breakfast smoothie, adding a scoop of pre-cooked whole grain quinoa. My brownies are what I call dessert with benefits because they are made with black beans and collagen.I use the Sparkle Wellness Skin Boost Plus which is made with premium collagen peptide, Versiol which has been clinically tested to help improve skin elasticity and nail strength while reducing fine lines and cellulite. In this recipe, I use the unflavored variety but it also comes in delicious flavors including Orange and Mixed Berry. Simple mix together 1 can of rinsed black beans, ½ cup of oats, 2 tbsp cocoa powder, 1/3 cup of maple syrup, ½ tsp baking powder, ¼ cup of oil and 2 tbsp of Sparkle Wellness Skin Boost Plus collagen. Transfer to a bread pan and bake for 20 min at 350 F.Sparkle Wellness also makes a Joint Boost product formulated with collagen peptides Tenderforte and Fortigel which have been clinically studied to deliver positive effects on joints including regeneration of joint cartilage and reduction in joint pain when taken every day.
