It is no secret that California has been hit with some pretty prolonged warm weather this year, hence the unfortunate drought. I find myself wanting to hit the pool more often than not this season and why not make a party out of it! Pool parties are incomplete without the right food spread. Here are some tips on creating a spread that will keep you and your guests energized and hydrated under the sun.
Eat your water.
First and foremost hydration should be a top concern in the heat. Help meet your 91 to 125 fluid ounces (2.7-3.7 liters) by choosing hydrating foods- think cucumber, tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, and carrots.
Do not underestimate the power of water.
We may feel cool once our body hits the pool water but that doesn’t mean we can’t get dehydrated. Water makes up more than two-thirds of our body’s weight and helps with a variety of functions including the functioning of our cells and organs, regulating body temperature and lubricating and cushioning joints. Therfore it’s important to have plenty of water on hand when heading to the pool. Note: I will be sharing a fun way to stay hydrated at the pool later this week!
Easy to snack:
Fruit skewers and watermelon pops are some of my favorite poolside snacks. Get creative with your combinations and keep hydration in mind when personalizing your skewers.
Light protein:
Swimming in the pool can be equally fun as it is a workout! Protein is a satiating nutrient and essential for muscle repair. Think chicken or shrimp skewers, or a turkey sandwich on whole wheat.
Later this week I will be sharing my pool party food spread including sparkling melon drinks, summer fruit skewers, and my summer “energy bites”!
