Open-Faced Tuna Melt

 Safe Catch Wild Tuna
Are you a breakfast person? I definitely am.

As a dietitian, I truly believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In fact, some studies show that kids that start their day with a balanced breakfast, perform better in school and are more likely to be at a healthy weight. Adults who start their day with a good meal, may be more likely to eat healthier throughout the remainder of the day. All the more incentive to start your day with a good meal!

Forgo your morning pastries and start your day with PROTEIN.

My rule of thumb when it comes to a balanced breakfast, is to combine protein with fiber for ultimate staying power. A tuna melt definitely fits the bill!

I cannot stress the importance of protein enough when it comes to breakfast (and all meals for that matter). It’s our satiating macronutrient and balances blood sugars much better than a scone or donut (which will likely leave us hungry again, mid-morning).

For the base, I used sprouted whole grain bread. Sprouting bread results in more bioavailable nutrients meaning your body can better absorb and utilize them. I also used Safe Catch Wild Tuna which is the lowest mercury brand of tuna on the market making it a kid-friendly option. I am fan of their seasoned elite variety which includes six different blends that have been seasoned and flavored for you.

Tune in to Good Food Friday this week on ABC’s Lowcountry Live! I will be sharing some high protein and fiber breakfast ideas for National Breakfast Month!
