News 4 Jacksonville: National Picnic Month

July 11, 2022

Cabot Cheese, Grillo's Pickles, APPLEGATE NATURALS® DO GOOD DOGS, True Made Foods, Fresh Cravings Hummus

It’s National Picnic Month! Pack the perfect picnic with these healthy meal and snack ideas.

First up we have pimento cheese pickle bites made with Cabot’s Greek yogurt and Seriously Sharp Cheddar cheese which is made with simple ingredients: milk, salt and cheese making cultures and has won every major award for taste. It’s naturally gluten-free, lactose free and a great source of protein. Cabot is owned by more than 700 farmers so you can feel good knowing you are supporting the farmer families. Find it at Publix and Walmart. I used Grillo’s pickles as the base which are the best pickles ever made with simple fresh clean ingredients, super cold, crunchy and found in the refrigerated pickle section. Plus, you can use the pickle chips or spears to level up your sandwiches and burgers. Find them at Publix, Target and Whole Foods.

Next up we have salads in a jar. Instead of bottled dressing, I use hummus thinned out with some water. The Fresh Cravings Hummus from Walmart comes in unique flavors like Everything bagel, roasted red pepper and honey jalapeno in 10 oz tubs or these larger family sizes and is made with a short list of high-quality ingredients like Chilean extra virgin olive oil, chickpeas and savory tahini. You can even use their refrigerated never cooked or pasteurized salsa as a dressing – find it chilled in the produce section at Walmart and the organic at Publix.

Finally we have healthier hotdogs for your picnic. I like the APPLEGATE NATURALS® DO GOOD DOGS which are made with regeneratively-sourced beef that is 100% natural and grass-fed. In fact, they boast the world’s first regenerative sourcing verification. Like all their products they contain no antibiotics ever and are humanely raised. Find them at Whole Foods and Walmart. Then we have nutritious toppings like crunchy pickles and nutritious condiments. Most hot dog condiments contain added sugar like high fructose corn syrup – my favorite is sweetened with fruits and vegetables instead by True Made Foods, a veteran owned company who makes ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce and more. Find them at Walmart, Sprouts, Whole Foods.
