News 4 Jacksonville: Healthy Travel

November 5, 2018

PRANA snacks, Barley + plus muesli, Cup Noodles Very Veggie, Naturally More Nut Butter

The holiday season is one of the busiest times for travel. Today on News 4 Jacksonville’s River City live, I shared some easy healthy items to keep you energized on the road.

Focus on fiber

My first tip when it comes to travel food, is to focus on fiber – it helps keep you satisfied, regular and most of us don’t eat enough. I shared my 3-ingredient energy bites using the Barley + muesli which is made with a non-gmo barley that contains 3 types of fiber including more prebiotic fiber than other whole grains. Prebiotics help feed the good bacteria in your digestive track, which helps keep your immune system strong. You can find them at Publix.

Focus on protein

Protein-rich snacks are also important for keeping you satisfied and energized on the road. Portable nut butter packets are my go-to – I shared my favorites by  Naturally More. I love this nut butter because they add flaxseeds and probiotics. Flaxseeds have those good omega-3 fats and probiotics, just like PRE-biotics help keep the immune system strong. You can find them on Amazon – I recommend pairing these with fruit, veggies or whole grains to build a balanced and energizing snack.

Help meet your 5 servings of veggies on the road

Meeting your recommended 5 servings of veggies per day is especially hard on the road so I shared the Cup Noodles Very Veggie. It’s the first instant cup noodle with a full serving of vegetables per container. They flavors include chicken, beef and their new vegetarian soy sauce flavor with edmamae, carrots and bok choy. Cup Noodles recently adjusted their recipe to lower the sodium and eliminate artificial flavors and added MSG while still retaining the same great taste.

Satisfy your sweet tooth, healthfully

It’s easy to grab candy from the gas station on long road trips. I shared a better-for-you way to satisfy your sweet tooth — PRANA chocolate bars. They’re vegan, organic and fairtrade with hidden bits of nutrient-dense super food ingredients like maca, matcha and chia seeds- which are a good source of fiber and omega-3 fats. You can find these at Target and pranasnacks.com – they’re currently offering 10% off snacks.
