Today on NBC Houston, I share tips for a healthier 2021!
Snack smarter!
My first tip is to snack smarter by focusing on protein and fiber. Somes examples are apple with pb, roasted chickpeas or flax crackers with salsa. I love this chunky and restaurant style Fresh Cravings salsa because they taste homemade, you can only find them chilled in the produce section at Walmart and Kroger and it’s a great way to sneak in more veggies.
Go plant-based once a week
For meatless Monday, I make stuffed peppers. Combine black beans, quinoa, corn, spices and salsa, spoon into your bell peppers and bake for 30 minutes at 375 F. This is packed with plant protein from quinoa and black beans.
Find healthier ways to satisfy your sweet tooth
Enter blooming’ apples! I started with the Autumn Glory Apples which have a sweet cinnamon, caramel and apple cider-like flavor. You can find them at HEB they are by Superfresh Growers. Slice off the top, scoop out the core, make two circular cuts then slice crosswise. Brush your apples with a mixture of maple syrup, cinnamon and a high heat cooking oil and bake for 30 minutes at 375 F.
Cook more meals at home
For my clients just starting out, I like Home Chef meal kits because they contain pre-measured ingredients you need to make chef-designed recipes at home. They’re also customizable so you can switch up proteins and choose meals with different levels of preparation and cook times including oven ready and heat and eat options.
