Today on FOX Denver I shared healthy back to school meal and snacks ideas that kids will love.
Tip 1: Build your healthy back to school snacks around fruits and veggies.
Stuffed celery is a fun way to incorporate both! Get creative with different protein and healthy fat spreads like guacamole, nut butters, cream cheese and hummus. Then I like to use no sugar added dried fruit as toppings. Such a fun snack that you can involve kids in that checks both your fruit and veggie boxes.
Tip 2: Swap potato chips for nutritious crunchy snacks.
My next tip is to replace potato chips with superfood chips. I love organic seaweed snacks because they are savory and crispy like potato chips BUT naturally low in calories, and high in vitamins and minerals like vitamin c and k.
Tip 3: Elevate your PB & J with whole grain bread, low sugar jams and different nut butters.
Yes, PB&Js can be healthy! Start with your whole grain bread. I like sprouted bread because its higher in protein and fiber and the vitamins and minerals are made more bioavailable during the sprouting process. Then add a no added sugar nut butter, followed by a low sugar fruit spread. The fun part is adding whole fresh berries to your sandwich. It adds fun texture and bumps up the vitamins, minerals and fiber.
Tip 4: Tortilla pizzas are a fun way to involve kids and help them get their whole grains, calcium, protein and veggies.
Finally, tortilla pizzas are a fun lunch that checks almost all of your food groups. Start with a whole grain tortilla, then add a protein of choice and load up on the veggies!
