FOX Chicago: Spring Clean Your Diet

Spring clean your pantry:

My first tip is to stock up on smarter cooking staples. Mushroom broth adds deep umami flavor to proteins, grains and veggies for not a lot of calories. The Pacific mushroom broth is organic, vegan and made with only four simple ingredients.

Spring clean your meals:

Next we are going to spring-clean our meals by first focusing on veggies! The Vegetable Meal Bowls by Green Giant Fresh are made with fresh spiralized and crumbled veggies. Pop them in the microwave; mix in the sauce it comes, then customize with our next ingredient…

Grain foods! Whole grains and enriched grains provide key nutrients including fiber, B vitamins and carbohydrates that give us energy. So don’t throw them out because what we replace them with, may be worse for our health in the long run.


Complete your meal by adding a lean protein. I love the Smithfield Marinated Fresh Pork because its been conveniently pre-seasoned for you so simply roast, sauté’ or slow cook and you have a delicious meal ready in less than 30 minutes. You can find these at local Jewel stores, Supervalu and Walmarts.

Spring clean your snacks:

Spring clean our snacks by pairing fiber and protein which is what I call a snack with staying power. The Sunsweet Ones and Fruit Packs feature California grown prunes, have 3 grams of fiber per serving and no added sugar. Simply pair these with nuts or cheese.

OR reach for snacks that contain both protein AND fiber like baked chickpea puffs! HIPPEAS  are organic, gluten free and come in vegan white cheddar, BBQ and sriracha. One serving has 4 grams of plant protein and 3 grams of fiber – you can find them at Whole Foods and Jewel Stores.
