NBC Houston: Healthy Halloween

California grapes, brainiac foods brain squeezers, tidbits meringue, that's it fruit, kalera lettuce

I’m back one Houston Life today sharing healthy halloween sweet snacks and recipes!

Sour patch grapes

First we have sour patch grapes! Everyone loves grapes and studies suggest that they may help support a healthy immune system thanks to the resveratrol and certain flavonoids they contain. They come in different shapes, sizes, colors and flavors but any will work in this recipe. Toss together California grapes with the lime juice and roll in crushed up freeze-dried apple – I used the Crunchables by That’s It which are made with just apples.  Unlike traditional Halloween candy, this recipe gets all its sweetness from fruit and no added sugar.

Low calorie ghost meringues

Start with Tidbits meringue drops – these have less than 2 calories per piece and 80 calories per pouch. For the eyes and mouth and you can make healthy chocolate icing with coconut oil, maple syrup, cocoa powder and applesauce – I’m use Brainiac Foods Brain Squeezer unsweetened applesauce pouches from Walmart – these are packed with brain nutrients including omega-3 DHA fatty acids and choline. I used the mega apple, but you could also use the apple strawberry or apple cinnamon.

Halloween harvest salad

Start with a base of butter lettuce by Kalera which is the nation’s largest local indoor vertical farmers with one located in Houston. It has a slightly sweet taste and buttery texture so perfect for salads, burgers, sandwiches – find it at HEB and Kroger. Then add black grapes, orange bell pepper and cherry tomatoes, pepitas, cut out sweet potatoes and applesauce vinaigrette – I use one applesauce pouch, ¼ cup of olive oil and acv, 1 tbsp Dijon mustard, S&P
