CBS WTOC, Mid-Morning Live: Healthy Back To School Snacks

Naturally More Peanut Butter, gimMe seaweed, Northwest Cherries, Saffron Road Dark Chocolate Crunchy Chickpeas

Kids are back to school and I  know that parents are looking for easy ways to feed their kids that they can feel good about and that the kids will like. I shared my back to school snack tips today on CBS WTOC!

Make veggies the star of your snacks

My first tip is to build your snack around VEGGIES and one way to get kids to eat them is to offer a delicious dip and what kid doesn’t love peanut butter? I shared the portable peanut butter packets by Naturally More. I like these because they have added flaxseeds and probiotics – flaxseeds have those good omega-3 fats important for brain health and probiotics which help keep our immune system strong. You can find them on Amazon.

Eat more veggies by enjoying them in a fun way

Another way to get kids to eat more veggies is to serve them in a unique way. I shared my favorite roasted seaweed snacks by gimMe – they are savory and crispy like potato chips BUT naturally low in calories, and high in vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and vitamin K. The teriyaki and sea salt roasted seaweed sheets are a favorite– they come in 6 packs, so you can easily toss them in your kids lunchbox. Their new organic seaweed thins are addicting as well – only 100 calories per bag, with 6 grams of both protein and fiber.

Kid-friendly fruit fave

Fruit is another nutritious snack for kids and CHERRIES are sweet like candy BUT are an excellent source of filling fiber and tout a slew of health benefits including helping to promote a more restful night’s sleep. Because cherry season is short, I like to stock up in the summer – you can freeze, dry or can them to enjoy all year round. Fresh cherries should still be available now through the end ofAugust.

A dessert with benefits

Finally I shared  a dessert that parents can fell good about feeding their kid – dark chocolate & chocolate chai crunchy chickpeas by Saffron Road. Unlike candy which is a pure carbohydrate, chickpeas have plant protein and fiber which can help prevent those spikes and dips in energy. You can find them at Whole Foods, Kroger and Publix.
