Today on FOX Charlotte I shared healthy meal, snack and dessert ideas you can make with ingredients at home.
BREAKFAST: My first tip is to build your breakfast around whatever fruit you have on hand. For me, that’s blueberries and the fresh season is starting in the US, they are a good source of Vitamin C, which supports immune health, and fiber, that helps us feel full. Current research is looking at blueberries and their potential ties to heart, brain and gut health.
LUNCH AND DINNER: For lunch and dinner, build your meals around protein and produce. Canned beans are a convenient source of protein and so are these frozen Farm Rich Meatballs you can find them at Harris teeter, Walmart and Food Lion. They have 11 grams of protein per serving from ground beef and savory pork. Pop those in the microwave for 2 minutes. I served them over zucchini noodles but winter squash is a great fresh produce option that lasts.
SNACKS Next choose snacks with staying power that contain protein and fiber like roasted chickpeas, veggies and hummus. When I have a sweet tooth, I like these Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint Patties or chocolate Banana Shakes. These are by Atkins so they’re they’re low in sugar and net carbs but high in protein so they’ll satisfy you without spiking your blood sugar. Find these at Walmart.
DESSERT Finally, choose desserts with benefits. I make my own chocolate using cacao powder and better for you oil and sweeteners.
