Infused water is an excellent choice for those trying to wean off the sweet stuff. Simply choose your favorite fresh seasonal fruits, veggies or herbs, add to water and sip!
Since moving to the south, it is apparent that sweet tea is all the rage. Sugar, however can be detrimental to us in excess, particularly when it comes to our skin. Sugar can act to covalently cross-link collagen fibers in our skin which prevents their easy repair. This can result in a premature aging of our skin and wrinkles. The process is accelerated when sugar is consumed in excess.
With summer right around the corner, it wouldn’t hurt to give infused water a try! Strawberry mint is my favorite combination to date. You get the subtle sweetness from the fresh strawberries and the refreshing aftertaste from the mint. Make up a large pitcher and keep in your fridge to sip on throughout the day.
Nutrition:
Strawberries: Choose strawberries that are firm, plump and have a shiny, deep red exterior. Both underripe and overripe strawberries have been show to have lower vitamin C and phytonutrient content compared to their ripe counterparts.
Mint: Mint is the most refreshing of all herbs. It has been shown to be healing to those with bowel irregularities. These healing properties are related to its ability to relax smooth muscle.
