Summer is here and traveling is on everyones agenda! Whether its a day trip two hours south or a cross-country excursion, you can never be too prepared for healthy travel. Traveling can often throw us out of our routine. We don’t have access to our kitchen gadgets, gym or healthfully stocked pantry. But travel doesn’t need to derail our nutrition. These are some tips to stay on track with your health and nutrition while still enjoying the spontaneity and excitement of traveling to new places.
1. Bring a reusable water bottle
I’m never without my BPA-free reusable water bottle. Water is my best friend, especially during travel. Flying can be dehydrating due to lack of humidity in the air. Additionally, driving long distances and flying for several hours means we may hold back on drinking enough in order to avoid stopping or climbing over neighbors to use the restroom on the aircraft. We know that water is important for keeping us energized, aiding elimination of waste and for the optimal functioning of our cells and organs. So don’t forget to drink up even on long travel days!
2. Pack whole fruit
Fruit is my go-to when it comes to travel snacks. Fruit provides us with a plethora of vitamins, nutrients and fiber. Additionally, they are high in water which helps maintain our hydration status. They pack well and the sugars give us immediate energy to fuel us through the day and stay satiated and energized before our next meal. You can’t go wrong with apples but as summer approaches, I am loving peaches and nectarines.
3. Portable protein
While having fruit on hand is always my go to, I like to bring some protein to keep be satiated between meals. This includes nuts, seeds, cheese sticks, hardboiled eggs and protein powder. I transfer these to the mini fridge at the hotel. These are great to have on hand in a pinch between meals.
4. Pack good walking shoes
Forgo fashion for comfort when it comes to footwear. Usually when I visit a new city I like to bring comfy shoes that allow me to explore on foot. Cities like New York City, San Francisco and Savannah are very walking friendly and you see more on foot than you would by car. You can still be active and maximize your travel experience.
5. Don’t be afraid to try new food
Vacation is not a time to be restrictive when it comes to trying new foods. One of the best parts of traveling for me is trying new restaurants that are unique and popular to the area. Bringing healthy snacks along and making good choices when you can makes it easier to splurge on beignets in New Orleans or cronuts in New York City!
