Tart, tangy with a hint of sweet, grapefruit is as pretty as it is tasty and happens to boast incredible nutrtition! Between cold-busting vitamin C and lycopene protecting our skin from the inside out, so many reasons to love this citrus fruit!
1. Contains powerful antioxidant lycopene
Lycopene is on of the most powerfully known antioxidants, found most commonly in red and pink colored produce.
2. Rich in cold-busting vitamin C
Oranges aren’t the only source of this free radical-scavenging, collagen-producing, iron-absorption-enhancing nutrient. Something to keep in mind is that vitamin C is sensitive to water and heat so cooking methods like quick steaming are preferred to boiling. Enjoying vitamin C-rich foods in their uncooked form will retain the most of this nutrient and thus provide the most nutritional benefit.
3. Tart, tangy, and sweet
Unlike it’s orange counterpart, grapefruit is lower in sugar but still boasts that tart and tang that we all love. Despite its low sugar content, it still boasts a lot of nutritional properties possessed by oranges such as collagen-producing, iron-absorption enhancing ascorbic acid.
4. Lycopene may help protect skin from sun damage
Lycopene, a carotenoid phytonutrient with suggested cardiovascular protection and anticancer benefit is common among produce with a red or pink hue. Research shows that lycopene demonstrates photo protective effects from the inside out.
5. Rich in cholesterol-lowering pectin fiber
Grapefruit is particularly rich in soluble fiber. Heart health and blood sugar regulation are both attributed to soluble fiber. Acting to lower cholesterol by blocking absorption and forming a gel to slow digestion and induce satiation are its two mechanisms of action.
